Mindful Manager: My Fun Journey as an MHFA and Why It Matters

17 / 02 / 2025

Recently, I had the opportunity to dive into an engaging Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training course—a journey that has not only enriched my role as a practice manager but also equipped me with invaluable skills to support our team and patients at Olive Tree Dental.

The course, led by the insightful Andy Elwood and made possible through our collaboration with Practice Plan (who continually recommend top-notch training opportunities), has empowered me to:

  • Recognise Early Warning Signs: Identify when someone might be struggling with their mental health and provide essential first-level support and early intervention.
  • Guide Towards Professional Help: Encourage individuals to seek and access professional help and additional support services.
  • Practice Active Listening and Empathy: Engage in conversations that are both understanding and non-judgmental, making sure to use language that reduces stigma and promotes mental well-being.
  • Uphold Core Values: Embody the qualities essential to the MHFA role—being approachable, impartial, confidential, empathic, and trustworthy.
  • Access Ongoing Support: Make use of dedicated resources like the Shout text service and the continuous learning opportunities provided by MHFA England.
  • Emphasise Self-Care: Continually reflect on and nurture my own mental health so I can be the best support for others.

Now that I’ve completed this training, I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned within our practice. I believe these skills will have a positive impact not only on our team’s overall well-being but also on our patient journey management—especially for those who might feel anxious about visiting the dentist or are facing mental health challenges.

At Olive Tree Dental, our commitment to caring goes beyond just dental treatments. By integrating MHFA principles, we’re enhancing our approach to support, ensuring that every conversation is rooted in empathy and active listening. This training has also reinforced our focus on reducing stigma and promoting positive mental health in every interaction.

I encourage fellow industry colleagues and practice managers to consider MHFA training for their teams. It’s a fun, rewarding investment that helps create a supportive culture—one where mental health, work-life balance, and genuine care for both patients and staff are at the forefront.

Thank you for reading, and please feel free to reach out if you’d like to learn more about my experience or the benefits of MHFA training.

Stay well and be well!
