Why Our Patients Love IV Sedation

Most commonly, sedation is administered intravenously through a very small needle on the back of a hand. We can also administer sedation orally, or through a mask. We can advise on which option will best suit you during your consultation.

Your Patient Journey

Your patient journey will be as fluid as can be – we believe in anxiety-free dentistry for our patients. We offer both in person and video consultations. Along the way to a new smile, you can expect the following steps:

1
Journey Icon

First Appointment
If you are a new patient to Olive Tree Dental a new patient exam is carried out first to ensure you are dentally fit for the treatment. We carry out a comprehensive assessment of your mouth, and take X-rays and photographs of your teeth, whilst also examining the soft tissues such as your gums and tongue, as well the gland area.

The need for dental treatment will be diagnosed. If you have expressed that you are nervous prior to this appointment, we can also use sedation to help you relax whilst we examine you.

Second Appointment
A sedation assessment is carried out either in-person, over the phone, or on a video call. We will assess what needs to be carried out, and request that you fill out an anxiety questionnaire and medical form. A sedation assessment is carried out and we will request that you fill out a consent form.

3

Third Appointment
This will be your treatment appointment, during which a chaperone must escort you home post-treatment. Two dentists will be present, one for sedation and one to carry out your treatment in addition to a nurse. You will be closely monitored at all times by the experienced sedation dentist. Once we are certain that your sedative is beginning to wear off, we will let you know that it’s OK to be accompanied home by your chaperone.

Aftercare
You may feel a little drowsy after treatment – we recommend that you do not drive for 24 hours following your treatment. Avoid hot food/drinks whilst your tooth is still numb due to the risk of a burning sensation around the area.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do All Dentists Offer Sedation?

Not all dentists offer sedation, and here at Olive Tree Dental, our sedation dentist is highly experienced, and will monitor your blood pressure, oxygen saturation, heart rate, respiratory rate, and reaction to the sedative, to ensure everything is running safely and smoothly at all times.

Will Sedation Give Me Confidence For Future Dentist Visits?

Many patients have sedation just once and never require it again, having overcome their phobia. Most commonly, dental phobia is born out of a negative experience with the dentist in the past. Once we have demonstrated to you that you are in competent, safe and experienced hands, we’re sure you will feel newly confidence about dentist visits going forwards.

Who Will Benefit From Sedation Dentistry?

  • Anyone who has been putting off dental care for years due to anxiety.
  • Individuals who would like their treatments completed in as few visits as possible.
  • Dislike the sounds, smells associated with a dental practice.
  • Have severe gag reflex making it challenging for dentists to ensure a smooth treatment process.
  • Have had bad experiences with dentists in the past.
  • Want to be treated in a relaxed, caring, and non-judgmental environment.

Is Sedation Painful? Will I be uncomfortable?

Patients generally don’t feel pain when using IV Sedation, although that doesn’t mean you won’t feel anything at all; patients can react differently. Some patients have no recollection of the procedure or treatment, whilst other patients remember short snippets. However, any minor discomfort you might feel will be easy to forget, thanks to the relaxing effect Sedation creates.

Is there a difference between IV Sedation and Oral Sedation? Which one do you use at OTD?

There are several similarities and several differences between Oral Sedation & IV Sedation. However, at OTD, we prefer using IV Sedation, and this is what we generally use on the majority of our patients.

Similarities:

  • Both will put the patient in a more relaxed state with possible drowsiness or a sleepy-like feeling.
  • Both can produce some form of amnesia, so the patient may or may not recollect the procedure or parts of it.
  • Both will dilute the patient’s perception or awareness of any noisy dental equipment, injections required or the discomfort of having an open jaw for lengthy periods of time.

Differences:

  • Oral Sedation can last for longer than required, whereas IV Sedation can end as promptly as the procedure is complete so the patient feels more like themselves sooner, requiring less downtime.
  • It can take longer for Oral Sedation to take effect (1-2 hours), whereas with IV Sedation (2-10 minutes).
  • It is easier to adapt to an emergency situation and reverse sedation with IV versus Oral Sedation. In oral sedation, each person will metabolise oral medications differently, so it is not as easy to predict what it will take to make the patient comfortable. Also, it can happen that a patient can be over-sedated with oral sedation and, therefore, proves more challenging to reverse since an IV is not started.

In summary, whilst Oral Sedation is an acceptable way to provide relaxation to the patient, IV Sedation is more efficient, does not last as long, and is ultimately more safer than other forms of sedation. This is also why the majority of our clinical team, such as Oral Surgeons, use IV sedation as a preferred method of sedation for our patients.

I have been going to olive tree dental now, for about a year and a half. The service is always so friendly and they really help you make the best decision when it comes to your teeth. I have had Invisalign treatment with Patricia, which was exceptional. The regular hygienist appointments and general check ups are also very good, and the parking around the dentist is excellent. I would highly recommend going here.read more

From the first step through the door it felt far removed from the standard clinical feel of any dentist I had been to previously. Not only are the offices beautifully decorated and the staff welcoming and friendly but the resulting impression from my first appointment was one of confidence instead of fear. Dr Zyada was very thorough in her checks and took the time to go through each and every tooth to explain exactly what needed to be done and why. It makes the return appointment a lot less daunting, thank you. Would definitely recommend Olive Tree Dental.read more

I went to Olive Tree Dental Clinic few times for teeth cleaning, emergency dental work and consultations. The clinic was very clean and inviting, stuff was very friendly and dentist was very gentle and reassuring. I appreciated the fact that she was communicating with me during the procedures so I wasn’t wondering what’s going on or when it will finish. I’ve been to quite a few dental clinics previously but never felt as valued and welcomed, and never got such high quality dental service. Highly recommend it to anyone and especially to those who feel nervous and anxious when visiting dentist. I feel lucky to live nearby!read more
