Overtime, tooth grinding can cause wear and tear that opens your teeth up to problems like decay and erosion. More serious cases of tooth wear can even cause problems with your jaw joint, causing jaw, head, and ear pain as a result.
And protect yourself against inadvertent night time tooth grinding, with a custom orthodontic mouth-guard.
If you’ve ever worn an over-the-counter boil and bite mouth guard, you will know just how uncomfortable they are. More importantly though, they’re made from weak materials, are not a custom-fit, and therefore do not provide protection against impact to the mouth.
Sports mouth guards are made from impressions of your teeth. Once created and fitted, there will not be any gaps between your teeth and the mouth guard, ensuring better protection during sports such as:
Hockey.
Rugby.
American Football.
Lacrosse.
Martial Arts.
Squash.
A large proportion of the population grind their teeth when they sleep. When you come in to see us, we will be able to examine your teeth for wear, for evidence of tooth wear that may have occurred during your sleep. Many patients also comment about toothaches associated with migraines. This too can be a result of tooth-grinding and can often be resolved when wearing a night-guard.
We can create a bespoke mouth guard that will fit comfortably in your mouth during your sleep.
This prevents tooth grinding and the concerns associated with it.
First Patient Visit
If you are a new patient to Olive Tree Dental a new patient exam is carried out first to ensure you are dentally fit for the treatment. We carry out a comprehensive assessment of your mouth, and take X-rays and photographs of your teeth, whilst also examining the soft tissues such as your gums and tongue, as well the gland area.
First Treatment Visit
During your examination, we will make the diagnosis confirming you have been grinding and clenching your teeth in your sleep. If you require a mouth guard for sports, this is created in the same way as it is for bruxism patients, though the material slightly differs.
Second Treatment Visit
A scan of your teeth is taken and sent away to the lab, so that your mouth guard can be custom-made.
Third Treatment Visit
Your fitting appointment is normally 10 days after your second appointment. We will ensure your mouth guard is a comfortable fit for your teeth, so that it can successfully prevent night time teeth grinding/protect your teeth during contact sports.
Overtime, tooth grinding can cause wear and tear that opens your teeth up to problems like decay and erosion. More serious cases of tooth wear can even cause problems with your jaw joint, causing jaw, head, and ear pain as a result.
We have a number of solutions for building up worn teeth, such as composite bonding (a minimally-invasive treatment), as well as crowns, and veneers. Even if your teeth are severely worn, don’t worry, as we can always find a solution to restore them.
Night-guards that are effectively designed to keep both your upper and lower teeth apart in order to prevent early tooth wear & teeth grinding whilst you sleep. How they work is that the bite plates on the guard are ground down with time, during bruxism episodes rather than your teeth getting worn down instead. Patients often tell us that headaches, jaw aches & pains are heavily reduced when using such a guard.
