Conditions such as polyps, mucoceles, lichen planus, and epulis are among the most common findings that can be detected.
Avoid long waiting lists—our specialist team performs oral biopsies in-house.
The procedure is straightforward and minimally invasive, typically taking only 15-60 minutes.
For added comfort, we offer conscious sedation for nervous or dental-phobic patients.
Results are delivered within 1-2 weeks, giving you peace of mind and a clear pathway to appropriate treatment if needed.
First Visit
A dentist or dedicated oral surgeon will carefully assess your condition and determine the most suitable biopsy method. Depending on the location, biopsies may target soft tissues (gums, lips, or tongue) or hard tissues (jawbone).
All biopsies are done under local anaesthetic, but sedation is an option for those who suffer from dental phobia or are nervous patients. If sedation is required a sedation assessment is carried out and you will be provided with additional protocol and aftercare.
At Olive Tree Dental, we perform all these procedures in-practice, eliminating the need for external referrals.
Second Visit
During your initial visit, most biopsies are often performed immediately after the consultation; if this is not possible, it will take place during a second visit. Local anaesthetic is applied to numb the area, and either a small portion or the entire area in question is removed. The site is closed with stitches.
This minimally invasive process usually takes between 15-60 minutes. The tissue sample is then sent to a local pathology lab for analysis, and a report is sent back to us within 1-2 weeks.
Post-Biopsy Appointment
Your oral surgeon will schedule a follow-up visit or a phone consultation to discuss the results. These findings will help determine whether the tissue is cancerous, benign, or related to another condition, guiding the next steps in your care plan.

Recovery depends on the biopsy location and the type of tissue sample taken. Many patients resume their normal activities once the anaesthetic wears off. If stitches were placed, avoid brushing the specified treated area for a couple of days unless otherwise instructed. Most biopsies are minimally invasive and don’t require extended recovery time.
