This female patient has been a long-standing patient with us and has consistently seen Dr Anjali for her maintenance appointments. During an appointment in a 2023 visit, she mentioned jaw pain in the mornings, which she noticed was caused by nighttime clenching and grinding. After Dr Anjali had consulted the patient’s condition, it was confirmed that she had a hypertrophy masseter. In this particular case, this was advanced for a woman of her age.
After this appointment, it was agreed that a mouthguard would be the best option moving forward. They chose a Soft splint as the option for her due to them being the easiest to use. Unfortunately, having tried the soft splint, it wasn’t comfortable for her. Dr Anjali encouraged her to continue using it for management while also advising her to consider Botox as a potential treatment option.
Having considered the Botox, the patient opted to proceed and met with Dr Ash for treatment. Dr Ash administered a total of 50 units, injecting each side of her jaw. At the 3-week follow-up appointment, the patient reported significant improvement and the masseter muscles had shrunk significantly, eliminating her jaw pain. As an added benefit, the Botox treatment also resulted in a slimmer jawline. This is very common when suffering from hypertrophy masseter, for the botox to slim the jaw.
